Expectations

Tomorrow I will begin my internship at the Dallas Museum of Art, which means that tomorrow is the day I get to live out a dream of mine. I get to walk into a museum as an employee. Well, technically, I'll just be an intern, but it's a step in the right direction.

I'll be working in the Center for Creative Connections (the "C3" studio), and my schedule for tomorrow is already promising:

1-1:30: learn about the C3 space and its functions
1:30 - 3:30: work in the space, maintaining the studio activities and observing
3:30 - 4:30: learn about the DMA's "Pop-up Art Spots"
4:30 - 5:30: wander the museum to get my bearings
6 - 9: cover the C3 studio and replenish supplies as needed

I have an entire hour to wander the galleries and learn how to navigate? Rough.

I expect that this internship will be a time of immense learning opportunities and unique experiences. Even just being able to observe the inner-workings of such a large museum should prove informative. I've felt stunted in my field because of a lack of experience in museums for quite a while now, and I'm excited to get my foot in the door. At this point, I'd be excited to get people coffee!

Specifically, I look forward to getting experience working with all ages (Do I really prefer working with teens and tweens, or do I just enjoy the idea of it?) as well as having the opportunity to observe how people reimagine the art as they incorporate art-historical theories into the projects in place in the C3 studio. I'm particularly interested in how--or rather, if--individuals utilize their smart phones in the galleries. As far as projects go, I'm hoping to implement a visitor-centric submission system that would allow people to upload images and reimaginings of the artwork on display.

I'm sure that the whole experience over the next few months is going to present me with opportunities I can't even imagine or predict at the moment, but needless to say, I'm pumped.

  1. Knowing you, Brittany, you made good work of your "required" hour of wandering in the galleries :) For the entire first week of my NGA experience, they told me to just wander about the museum so that I could familiarize myself with it and the collection. It was rough, as you can imagine ;) I hope everything is going marvelously for you at the DMA!
